About DIY Project Calc
Buying too little means a second trip to the store; buying too much wastes money. These calculators turn room and yard measurements into gallons, bags and cubic yards, with the coverage figures shown so you can match them to your product.
How we keep it accurate
Every number that comes from a standard or a manufacturer links to the original source on the page where it is used. The math is shown next to each result so you can check it yourself, and every count is rounded up with the unrounded figure printed beside it.
- Unit conversions (1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly, 27 cu ft = 1 cu yd, 4 quarts = 1 gallon) come from NIST Handbook 44 and NIST's note on the international foot.
- Paint coverage starts from a Benjamin Moore technical data sheet; concrete bag yields come from the QUIKRETE Concrete Mix data sheet; the waste allowances come from Sakrete (concrete) and Bruce and Mannington (flooring).
- Mulch depth guidance comes from Clemson University and the University of Maryland Extension.
Products differ, so these are estimates: check the label on your can, bag or carton and type its number into the calculator. We fix errors as soon as we find them.
