DIY Project Calc / Concrete calculator
How many bags of concrete in a yard?
One cubic yard of concrete takes 45 bags of 80 lb mix, 60 bags of 60 lb or 90 bags of 40 lb. A cubic yard is 27 cu ft, and QUIKRETE lists an 80 lb bag of its Concrete Mix at about 0.60 cu ft, so 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45.
Bags per yard for every bag size
Each count is 27 cu ft divided by the yield printed for that bag, rounded up to whole bags for the half and quarter yards. The last column adds 10% for spills, uneven ground and form bulges, which Sakrete recommends adding to every estimate.
| Bag | Yield | Bags per cu yd | Half yard | Quarter yard | 1 yd + 10% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 lb | 0.30 cu ft | 90 | 45 | 23 | 99 |
| 50 lb | 0.375 cu ft | 72 | 36 | 18 | 80 |
| 60 lb | 0.45 cu ft | 60 | 30 | 15 | 66 |
| 80 lb | 0.60 cu ft | 45 | 23 | 12 | 50 |
| 90 lb | 0.675 cu ft | 40 | 20 | 10 | 44 |
The yields are approximate and belong to QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101. Other mixes, such as fast-setting or high-strength blends, can yield a different amount per bag, so check the label on the bag before you buy.

Work out your own pour
Most jobs are not exactly a yard. The concrete calculator takes a slab, footing, round column or steps in feet and inches and gives cubic yards and bags with the extra you choose.
Questions people ask
- How many 80 lb bags of concrete are in a yard?
- 45. QUIKRETE lists about 0.60 cu ft per 80 lb bag of Concrete Mix, and 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45. With 10% extra, buy 50.
- How many 60 lb bags make a yard?
- 60, because a 60 lb bag yields about 0.45 cu ft and 27 ÷ 0.45 = 60.
- How many 40 lb bags of concrete make a yard?
- 90, at about 0.30 cu ft per bag.
- How many bags for half a yard?
- 23 bags of 80 lb mix (13.5 cu ft ÷ 0.60 = 22.5, rounded up), or 30 bags of 60 lb.
